A new version of free, open-source productivity suite ONLYOFFICE is out, bringing more than a thousand bug fixes and an expanded set of AI features.
ONLYOFFICE Desktop Editors v10.0 is billed as a “fully rebuilt app”, and the developers warn those upgrading from earlier versions that not all of their settings and preferences will transfer over.
Notably, its AI integrations are no longer included as a plugin that ships with the app.
Inside, AI features in ONLYOFFICE 10.0 are provided via a separate AI Tools add-on. This needs to be downloaded and installed (the app has a flow for that). The old AI plugin was removed from open source builds because of user feedback, per the devs.
When AI Tools are installed and configured (requires a cloud provider API or local LLM running via Ollama or similar) it can do more across all of the suite’s document editors. The team say “AI understands the context of each file, its suggestions stay relevant and useful”.
In the PDF Editor, it can generate summaries of an open document or answer questions on it contents. In other apps, like the Document Editor, AI can be used to perform task, e.g., improve text formatting, create a table of contents, etc.
The AI Chat interface has preset prompts that fit common use cases, but you can create Quick Actions to perform one-time tasks or AI Assistants to act as a collaborative editor that works alongside you, on a document, in real-time as you write, edit and update its contents.
AI Tools can also now access the web and interface with Multi-Context Protocol (MCP) severs to, depending on the use case, pull in, glean or query data elsewhere.
Non-AI changes in v10.0
Local document templates are no longer included in ONLYOFFICE, only cloud-based options remain. Window border thickness was reduced in Linux builds and, at last, a window shadow added. Each editor sees its own set of improvements too.
The Redact tool in the PDF Editor is now able to strip document metadata and remove annotations. Signatures can be added via the Comment tab, the Comments panel now provides a list of every annotation and a new annotation settings panel was added.
In Document Editor, there are options to continue a list or restart numbering when pasting numbered items into a document with an existing list.
During co-editing, you can now jump to another person’s cursor and follow it as they work. Paragraph text with exact line spacing is now clipped by line, and right-to-left documents handle equations and other inline objects as expected.
Spreadsheet Editor will highlight ranges a formula applies to in the formula bar, gains a toggle for AutoComplete on cell values and can now save to the XLS format (nifty for those times a file is being sent to someone whose software predates XLSX).
Calculations for array formulas referencing entire columns or rows have also been made faster and use less memory to crunch the numbers.
In the Presentation Editor there are various new print modes (mirroring various new view modes) as well as options to set whether hidden slides, slide backgrounds and frames, comments and slide numbers appear on printed pages.
